Rooney was enlisted by the distillery to retell the story of the Three Collas, three brothers who conquered and ruled over most of Ireland around the fourth century AD.
Rooney has more than 30 years’ experience as an artist and illustrator and has recently worked on a number of cultural and historical projects, including 100 illustrations for the BBC documentary series The Story of Ireland. He worked alongside designer Conor Smyth of Backbar Studios on the whiskeys' new packaging and labels.
The packaging is said to explain how the spirit of Clan Colla is still alive through hundreds of Irish names and families. As part of the launch campaign for the new packaging, people are being encouraged to discover if they are also part of the clan – common surnames include McDonald, Connolly, Carroll and Kelly.
Clan Colla Irish Whiskey celebrates the descendants of Gareth and Michelle McAllister, the founders of Ahascragh Distillers, with whiskeys at a variety of ages and cask finishes. Uais Irish Whiskey honours one of the Three Collas, Caireall Colla Uais, who overthrew the monarch and ruled as High King of Ireland.
Both brands are available to buy at the Celtic Whiskey Shop and other specialist stockists.
