An enormous amount has been published about the popularity of ebooks and I must admit I was not a huge fan. However, we have recently acquired a new Ipad Air in the office and I downloaded the ebook version of Dave Broom’s new revised Whisky Atlas. It really does add a new element to the enjoyment of the book and the quality of the images are superb. With the added features, it’s really worth aquiring it at £14.99.\r\n\r\n
\r\nThe World Atlas of Whisky
\r\nDave Broom
\r\nISBN 9781845339517
\r\nBookclub offer: £22.50 plus P&P
\r\n(RRP: £35)\r\n\r\nAward-winning author, whisky expert and Whisky Magazine’s Editor at large Dave Broom, explores over 200 distilleries and examines over 400 expressions. Detailed descriptions of the Scottish distilleries can be found here, while Ireland, Japan, the USA, Canada and the rest of the world are given exhaustive coverage. There are tasting notes on single malts from Aberfeldy to Tormore, Yoichi (and coverage of the best of the blends). Six especially created 'Flavour Camp Charts' group whiskies by style, which allow readers to identify new whiskies from around the world to try. This extrensively updated and extended edition features new material on burgeoning areas, including detailed coverage of many recently opened US craft distilleries, new distilleries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and discussion of the growing whisky scene in Latin America.\r\n\r\nWith over 200 beautiful colour photographs and 21 colour maps locating distilleries and whisky-related sites, this is a stylish celebration of the heritage, romance, craftsmanship and versatility of whisky. What’s also very interesting about this book is the ebook version. An interactive flavour map plots expressions according to their ‘flavour camp.’ In addition, a widget pulls Dave’s tasting notes from across the entire book together onto one interactive page. Simply tap the expression on the map to bring up the tasting notes for that whisky. Like the print book, the ebook is a highly visual experience, with beautiful photography enhanced by the iPad’s backlighting, each of which can be double-tapped to render them fullscreen.\r\n\r\n
\r\nLet Me Tell You About Whisky
\r\nNeil Ridley & Gavin D. Smith
\r\nISBN 9781862059658
\r\nBookclub offer: £13 plus P&P
\r\n(RRP: £16.99)\r\n\r\nThere have been a lot of primer books about whisky in recent years, but not one with such detailed and all encompassing scope. The book assumes that the reader has no prior whisky knowledge and clearly explains the processes that go in to making whisky. In the opening sections, and using some lovely illustrations, the writers take the story of how whisky began and demystify some of the common myths about whisky. The writers also offer practical advice, useful when faced with a daunting shop full of malts and blends.\r\n\r\n
\r\nDistilled
\r\nJoel Harrison and Neil Ridley
\r\nISBN 9781845339111
\r\nBookclub offer: £12 plus P&P
\r\n(RRP: £14.99)\r\n\r\nToday’s world of spirits is experiencing an explosive increase in craft distillers and pioneers of new distillates. It’s about men and women tearing up the rule books and creating new spirits with extraordinary personality. This book uncovers the best spirits that the world has to offer. These are not necessarily the best-known examples on the planet – though if they are good, they have a place here – but the best crafted and most interesting. Spirit by spirit, Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley explain everything you need to know to appreciate a distillate: its ingredients, its classic forms, and the choices made in creating it. They offer their picks of the ones to search out, the world’s best examples of their type. A very good read and very well researched with great interviews.\r\n\r\n \r\n
