Ardbeg has answered the calls of its loyal fanbase — the Ardbeg Committee — with the announcement of Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength. Matured in hand-selected casks and filled with spirit at an extremely high strength, Ardbeg’s unrivalled intensity has never been more prominently on show.
A highly limited release of a cask-strength 10 Years Old was debuted in Japan in 2003, and there have been calls ever since for a release that Committee members can buy. Ardbeg’s whisky creators, led by Dr Bill Lumsden, answered the call and promised to create a historic edition of the Ardbeg classic in honour of its members’ loyalty. The team carefully selected a few American oak bourbon casks, including some experimental barrels filled with undiluted spirit.
In 2023, on the distillery’s annual Ardbeg Day, a group of 100 Committee members were invited by Ardbeg’s whisky makers to take part in the intriguingly named Operation Smokescreen, which led to last year’s release of Ardbeg Eureka! The group tasted and discussed extreme examples of Ardbeg whiskies straight from the cask.
However, as master blender and committee co-chair Gillian Macdonald explains, there was a standout moment from the day that led to the realisation that it was time for a cask-strength edition: “Of course, we had to start with Ardbeg Ten as our flagship. No lie, if we had just given them Ardbeg Ten, they would have been thrilled. They had to vote at the end what their favourite was, and they couldn’t vote for the flagship. But they were all saying, can’t we just have this! It was obvious the passion and demand was still there. At some point, you have to relent!”
Fast-forward nearly three years, and the Committee has its long-awaited wish.
On the nose, Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength is rich and smoky, with a delightful combination of toffee and sea salt, with a hint of vanilla from those ex-bourbon casks. On the palate, the whisky has a surprising sweetness, with notes of cinnamon and paprika followed up by a wave of smoke. The finish is long and cooling. Despite its 61.7% ABV, it has a tremendous sweetness and fresh lightness, which makes it an accessible cask-strength dram.
As one of the world’s smokiest and peatiest Islay malt whiskies, the flagship Ardbeg Ten has been a favourite among Ardbeg fans for its representation of the distillery’s flavour profile. Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength honours this in abundance, while using its higher ABV to turn up the volume and elevate it to a whole new level.
This highly anticipated release is the first Committee Edition unveiled during the tenure of co-chairs Macdonald and distillery manager Bryony McNiven, who succeeded previous chair Jackie Thomson in 2025.
Commenting as new co-chair, McNiven says: “Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength is arguably one of the most wanted Ardbegs ever. It’s fantastic to finally be sharing it with the Committee. What a dram — a perfect balance of wood smoke, citrus sweetness, and salt.”
The Committee was founded in 2000 and is made up of Ardbeg followers worldwide keen to ensure the stability and future of the beloved whisky brand. Today, there are more than 200,000 members across more than 140 countries. Committee members are not only consulted on new expressions and offered exclusive bottlings, but also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings, and events.
Released especially for members of the Ardbeg Committee, Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength will be available via Ardbeg’s website from 24 February 2026 at RRP £75. For visitors to the distillery, a small number of bottles are ready to buy in person.
