Scotch icon Brora is releasing a distillery-exclusive bottling to mark three years since its highly anticipated reopening.

The Brora 44 Years Old Untold Depths is a release that celebrates the Sutherland distillery's 'age of peat', a 12-year period of its history (1969–1981) during which it produced peated spirit. Its timing coincides with the reintroduction of peated malt spirit production at the distillery.

Dating from 1977, the spirit used for the new Untold Depths release was taken from a single cask and bottled at 49.1% ABV, with only 150 bottles available. As well as celebrating Brora's peated past, it is also a homage to the distillery's Warehouse No 1, which has matured many of its most precious casks over the decades.

Untold Depths is the second in a planned series of limited releases from Brora, following Hidden Beneath, a 39-year-old whisky matured in American oak that was bottled in 2021 to mark the distillery's reopening.

Master blender Dr Craig Wilson said: “The second in a series of releases from the distillery, Untold Depths is a classic pairing of a gentle cask and medium peating which explores the full depth of taste of which Brora is capable. On the nose the whisky holds waxy hints of fragrant incense and green grape skins drift through light peat smoke, then dried herb and scented oil slowly rising through a swirl of buttery toffee. Waxy-smooth, the sweet, lightly fruity taste reaches a long and fragrant finish with a pinch of white pepper.”

In addition to welcoming a 'new age of peat', 2024 will also see the first casks that were filled when the distillery reopened reach three years old and legally become whisky. From July, visitors on the Eras of Brora tour will have the opportunity to sample some of this spirit, getting a taste of the new Brora.

Andrew Flatt, Brora Distillery host, called it a historic milestone. “Three years since the wildcat gates reopened, our new-make spirit is coming of age. This year, what lies in the casks at Brora can finally be called Scotch whisky,” he said.

“We see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for guests to be amongst the first in the world to sample this whisky in over 40 years. It is an honour to present three different styles of spirit to aficionados, collectors, and fans of Brora who choose to visit our Highland home.”

Brora 44 Years Old Untold Depths is only available to purchase in person directly from Brora Distillery from July at an recommended price of £10,000.
