The distillery-exclusive Octomore 13.4 is distilled from 100 per cent Scottish Concerto barley malted to a hefty 137.3ppm. The spirit was initially filled into first-fill bourbon casks in 2016, before being re-casked into virgin American oak later that year.
It joins the Octomore 13.1, 13.2 and 13.3 expressions in this latest collection of Bruichladdich’s famously heavily peated single malt.
Both the Octmore 13.1 and 13.2 were distilled used the same batch of heavily peated malted barley and were aged for the same five-year period, but the cask regimes provide their points of difference: the 13.1 was primarily matured in ex-bourbon and Tennessee whiskey barrels, the 13.2 in oloroso sherry butts.
Bruichladdich Distillery’s head distiller Adam Hannett said: “Completing the Octomore 13 series, the 13.4 edition once more demonstrates the delicate balance of intense peak smoke with our elegant signature style. The maturation profile combined with strong peat levels and cask strength has resulted in a truly unique and complex single malt.”
Octomore 13.4 is available to purchase now at Bruichladdich.com (priced at £170).
