Bushmills Irish Whiskey has announced Bushmills 15 Years Old, a new addition to its core range of single malt Irish whiskeys.
According to master blender Alex Thomas, the brand approached the new whisky in “a really experimental way”. The 15 Years Old departs from the brand’s typical sherry influences, having first been matured in first and second-fill bourbon barrels for at least 14 years, before a 12-month finishing period in Cognac casks.
The casks are sourced from central France. Thomas commented: “For several years, the Cognac soaks deep into the fine grain of these luxurious casks before they’re ready to be emptied and sent to us at the Old Bushmills Distillery. It’s a lavish and really exciting process!”
The release continues Bushmills’ exploratory approach to cask finishes in its recent expressions; in April 2024, the brand revealed a 14-year-old single malt finished in Malaga wine casks.
Reflecting on the new 15 Years Old, Thomas concluded: “I like to sample the whiskey every two months or so, just to make sure the softer vanilla notes from the bourbon casks aren’t overpowered. I’m looking for a harmony of sweetness and fruitiness. Only when it’s perfect do we bottle it!”
Bushmills 15 Years Old (40% ABV, RRP £49) will be available this month across the UK via select online retailers.
