Whisky and gin distillery Cooper King is raising a glass to a major milestone in its support of environmental charity the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT).

Ahead of International Day of Forests on 21 March, the distillery – based at Sutton-on-the-Forest, north of York – revealed it has supported the creation of a whole hectare (10,000 sqm) of woodland.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Cooper King Distillery made a pledge in August 2018 to donate least 1 per cent of its gin sales towards YDMT's tree-planting work in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. So far it has exceeded that target, with more than 2.5 per cent of sales from its Dry Gin and Herb Gin going to the charity.

The distillery sources all its wheat and barley from Yorkshire farms, was the first in Europe to join the 1% for the Planet environmental initiative and is one of a handful in the country to run on 100 per cent green energy.

Abbie Neilson, co-founder of Cooper King Distillery, said: "We believe drinking good spirits needn't cost the earth. Working with YDMT has ensured this ethos becomes a reality. We loved supporting YDMT, not just by giving donations but also through getting involved in their tree-planting and woodland walk events. We're proud to have supported the planting of a hectare of woodland, and a huge thanks is owed to our customers for continuing to help conserve and protect the environment."

Launched in summer 2018, YDMT's Together for Trees campaign aims to plant a total of 100,000 trees over the next two years, with close to 60,000 planted so far.

Sarah Hodgson, development officer at YDMT, said: "We're really grateful to Cooper King Distillery and all their staff and customers for their support in helping to restore native woodland to the Yorkshire Dales. We look forward to continuing this exciting partnership."
