Bowmore ARC-52: The Mokume Edition

A Bowmore ARC-52: The Mokume Edition has sold for £187,500 at a Sotheby’s, with all proceeds raised from the auction going toward a dedicated fund to support the community of Islay.

The winning bidder not only won the unique decanter, but also won the opportunity to enjoy an experience at Bowmore Distillery on Islay, with a limited-edition Aston Martin DBX Bowmore Edition, the brand’s first luxury SUV.

Beam Suntory’s global private client director Daryl Haldane: “We are delighted with the successful sale of the unique Bowmore ARC-52: The ‘Mokume Edition’ today. We are incredibly proud that this auction continues Bowmore’s highly prized single malt status amongst collectors and whisky enthusiasts around the world, who appreciate its craftsmanship and heritage.

We are excited to donate the proceeds back to Islay to support vital initiatives for the community providing a positive impact for years to come.”

Sotheby’s head of whisky & spirits, Jonny Fowle, added: “Bowmore’s ARC-52 Mokume Edition is as much a masterpiece of design as it is an exclusive whisky. These two legacy British brands have produced something that is visually spectacular to house a totally unique liquid time capsule. Today’s most dedicated collectors aim not only to collect legendary bottles, but particularly those which are unique. The price achieved for the Mokume is testament to this.”

The four bottles come from Talisker, Strathisla, Highland Park and Glenfiddich, representing some of Scotland’s finest and most well-regarded distilleries. One of only 50 sets, all of which sold out, this is a rare opportunity for collectors to own these releases, with all proceeds going to the foundation.

GlenDronach
Words by Heather Storgaard

The GlenDronach is one Scotland’s most historic distilleries, renowned for the exceptional marriage of a robust Highland spirit and exquisite sherry cask maturation. This month, Whisky Auctioneer sees a 1940s single malt GlenDronach appear at auction, believed to be one of the very earliest officially bottled single malt, or "perfect self whisky" as the label reads. Bearing the signature of Charles Grant, to whom the distillery was sold in 1920, this is likely to have been one of the first releases upon the revival of the distillery by the Grants of Glenfiddich. Alongside the 1940s GlenDronach Finest Highland Malt, this month’s auction also features bottles from the William Teacher & Sons era of the distillery, including from Previ and Ruffino Import, and modern expressions such as The GlenDronach Grandeur.

This month sees a large collection of Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Cards available at Whisky Auctioneer, including an entire collection of 'Spades' releases.

Glen Grant 72 Years Old

Bonhams Skinner will present one of the rarest bottles of Scotch, Gordon & MacPhail’s Glen Grant 1948 72 Years Old, at its Rare Spirits sale from 19 – 29 June. It marks the first time this bottling has been offered at auction in the United States and has an estimate of $70,000-$100,000.

The 72 Years Old whisky was distilled back in 1948, matured in American oak ex-Sherry cask and bottled in 2020. The cask produced 290 bottles and the whisky is housed in a hand cut Dartington Crystal decanter.
