English distillery White Peak has released its oldest whisky to date, its first to have been fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels.
The new Wire Works Bourbon Barrel single malt is a vatting of exclusively first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, and includes some of the first casks to be laid down after White Peak's founding in 2016. Like previous whisky releases from the Derbyshire distillery, the spirit is lightly peated.
It becomes the second permanent expression in White Peak's range alongside Wire Works Caduro, launched in March 2023.
Max Vaughan, founder of White Peak Distillery, said: “We’re so excited to be releasing our second permanent expression to build on our core range of whiskies following Caduro last year. Bourbon Barrel is a signature whisky for us, elevating our house style and showcasing our unique flavour elements: our Derbyshire home, lightly peated malt barley, fresh local brewer’s yeast, long fermentation, and slow distillation.
“Ex-bourbon barrels are considered to be relatively inactive and so their exclusive use in maturation can really highlight a distillery’s true house character.”
White Peak's Wire Works Bourbon Barrel (53.5% ABV) is bottled non-chill filtered and with natural colour. It is available from 5 July via the distillery shop and online, as well as from select retailers and trade partners nationwide, with a recommended price of £65.
