The Glasgow Distillery has revealed two new additions to its Small Batch Series. The series is a stage for experimentation for the distillery’s brand Glasgow 1770, which plays with different cask finishes. Previous iterations have included Tequila, Calvados, and Manzanilla sherry cask finishes.
Joining the lineup are Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish and Glasgow 1770 Tokaji Cask Finish. At six years old, they are the first age-statement whiskies in the Small Batch Series.
The Cognac Cask Finish (58% ABV) uses unpeated and peated whiskies blended for a lightly peated result, before an extended finish of three years and our months in Cognac casks. The Tokaji Cask Finish (54.8% ABV), which is unpeated, has also had a long finishing period of three years and six months in Hungarian Tokaji wine casks. Both whiskies were originally matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks.
Mike Hayward, co-founder of the Glasgow Distillery, commented: “These expressions benefit from extended secondary maturations, showcasing the expertise in cask management amongst the team we have here at the Glasgow Distillery.”
Hayward shared tasting notes for both expressions: the Cognac Cask Finish offers “notes of sweet smoke, rich honey, poached pear, dried apple, and vanilla ice cream,” while the Tokaji Cask Finish has “notes of tropical mango, pineapple orange, dried apricot, cashew nuts, manuka honey, and nutmeg spice.”
Both expressions have been released in limited quantities with an RRP of £59, available via the Glasgow Distillery and in specialist retailers.
