Speyside distillery Glen Moray is exploring its smoky side with new release Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old. The 'Smoky Twelve' is a permanent addition to the brand's single malt lineup.
Glen Moray says the new release uses peated barley to complement its signature "smooth and fruity" style with notes of bonfire smoke. The Smoky Twelve has been matured in both American and European oak casks to draw complexity into the final bottling.
Iain Allan, Glen Moray global brand ambassador, commented: "With Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old our distillery has bottled the best of both worlds for whisky fans. This is a classic taste of our much-loved Speyside single malt aged in an interesting mix of superb quality oak, with the added depth and smokiness of peated barley.
"It’s a winning combination, and whilst Glen Moray is best known for its unpeated Speyside style, I think our fans are really going to enjoy the soft, sweet bonfire notes of this very moreish and accessible new dram. There’s also incredible flavour and a peaty punch in there to appeal to the whisky world’s smoke lovers! With Father’s Day fast approaching, this is a great gift to for all the dads out there who appreciate something new to savour in their whisky collection at home."
Tasting notes shared by the distillery highlight flavours of vanalla, orchard fruits, and spice, with peaty undertones and oak.
Glen Moray is well-established in its explorative approach to its spirit, often through its experimental use of cask types — earlier this year, the distillery released a maple syrup cask-finished spirit drink. The Smoky Twelve isn't the first time in recent months that the distillery has bottled smoky spirit (a less common practice for Speyside producers); last year, the distillery bottled two Rioja-cask whiskies, one peated and one unpeated.
Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old (46.3% ABV, RRP £49.99) is available via select specialist whisky retailers.
