Speyside distiller Glen Moray has announced two additions to its Warehouse 1 collection. The collection is home to the distillery’s “most experimental and adventurous whiskies”.
The two limited-edition releases joining the portfolio are Glen Moray Rioja Matured and Glen Moray Peated Rioja Finish. The distillery team experimented with Rioja red wine casks sourced from Spain in different ways to produce the duo.
Commenting on the release, Glen Moray brand ambassador Iain Allan shared: “The whiskies of our Warehouse 1 Collection are among some of our most intriguing and experimental single malts. And these two limited editions aged in Rioja red wine casks are sure to appeal to inquisitive whisky enthusiasts.”
The first to be laid down in the Rioja casks was the Rioja Matured whisky, which aged for eight years. The distillery says the result is a “full-bodied take” on a Speyside whisky. Allan added: “Deep and fruity, with notes of cherries, plums and leather, Glen Moray Rioja Matured is a dram as rich as it is rare.”
The second take on a Rioja-cask whisky is the Peated Rioja Finish. For this 11-year-old expression, Glen Moray gave the lightly peated bourbon-cask-matured spirit a finishing period in Rioja casks. “With its gentle smoke and plummy tastes, Glen Moray Peated Rioja Finish is a fascinatingly different take on Glen Moray,” Allen commented.
The releases follow previous cask experiments by Glen Moray, including its Explorer range.
Glen Moray 2012 Peated Rioja Finish (58.8% ABV) and Glen Moray 2015 Rioja Matured (59.8% ABV) will be available in limited quantities in the UK, US, and select markets worldwide, as well as at the Glen Moray Distillery.
