Glengoyne Distillery has added a new edition to its Oak Masters' series. The collection launched last year with the introduction of White Oak, which marked a departure from the distillery's signature sherry-cask style.
The new whisky, Glengoyne Mizunara Oak, is a 16-year-old limited-edition single malt which takes the distillery's classic sherried style in a new direction. The spirit has first been matured in first fill sherry and refill casks for a decade, before a further six years of ageing in mizunara oak casks.
Mizunara oak is known for being difficult to work with; the Japanese wood is prone to to leakage, difficult to season, and requires expert craftsmanship (Mark Jennings further explores the trials and joys of mizunara in issue 208 of Whisky Magazine). Used well, the oak can give an "incense" aroma to whisky.
Glengoyne says its initial sherry maturation is the "perfect base" for a mizunara finish. Katy Muggeridge, brand director, commented: "This exceptional single malt is not just another whisky - it’s a sensory journey spanning continents, bringing together Scotland’s distilling heritage with Japan’s revered mizunara oak. We have travelled the world to find casks that enhance Glengoyne’s elegant, fruity character. Mizunara oak was a natural next step for us..."
Tasting notes provided by the brand highlight toffee, sandalwood, and incense on the nose, with spices, coconut, and apple on the palate and a long, sweet finish.
Glengoyne Mizunara Oak (53.4% ABV, RRP £300) will be available from 13 August 2025.
