Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake inspired by Dr Bill Lumsden's special 'cake moments'

Scotch whiskymaker Glenmorangie is aiming to celebrate the joy of a 'cake moment' with its latest single malt.

Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake is inspired by memories of baking, birthdays and more, with flavours of honey, white chocolate and the fruit notes typical of the distillery's whiskies.

The idea for the spirit began with Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's director of whisky creation, musing on how some of his happiest memories involved a slice - or more - of cake. He experimented by finishing Glenmorangie in wine casks from the Tokaji region of Hungary, which lent their sweet honeyed notes to the smooth and fruity whisky.

Dr Bill said: "Like so many of us, some of my favourite memories come from cake, whether it be helping my granny in her kitchen, or the pineapple birthday cake my daughter surprised me with one year. By finishing whisky in Tokaji wine casks, I've captured the joy of those indulgent cake moments in Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake. The liquid is a rich copper, but the taste is pure technicolour - luscious, sweet and complex with multi-layered bursts of honey, white chocolate and fruits with a hint of mint."

In honour of its release, award-winning pastry chef Dominique Ansel has devised a cake and cocktail pairing - a "CakeTail" - inspired by A Tale of Cake, featuring a reimagined pineapple boat cake and a pineapple Old Fashioned. He has also created CakeTail pairings in honour of Glenmorangie's Original, Lasanta and Quinta Ruban whiskies, which will be available to a lucky few customers at his New York bakery.

"Baking and whisky making are different worlds, but they have a lot in common," said Dominique. "When I first tried Glenmorangie, it opened by eyes to this amazing world of colour, texture, taste and aroma - it's a new adventure every time."

Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake will be available exclusively in Selfridges from 22 September until 18 October, then at other specialist retailers from 18 October onwards with a recommended price of £75.
