Glenmorangie releases Amontillado cask-finished single malt

Glenmorangie Amontillado Finish is the fourth release in the distillery's Barrel Select Reserve series

28 February 2023

Glenmorangie has unveiled a new single malt whisky inspired by its creator's favourite style of sherry.

The Glenmorangie Amontillado Finish comprises 12-year-old single malt whisky which has been aged in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Amontillado sherry casks – a variety of sherry renowned for its delicate nutty and spicy flavours. It is the fourth release in Glenmorangie's Barrel Select Release series of small-batch single malts, which has also included a 13-year-old Cognac cask-finished expression.

Dr Bill Lumsden, director of whisky creation at Glenmorangie, has for some time been working on a way to incorporate Amontillado sherry's distinctive profile with the Highland distillery's famously light, honeyed style. After sourcing a handful of the desired sherry casks, he filled them with spirit which had spent eight years ageing in ex-bourbon barrels.

Of the new release, Dr Lumsden said: "I have always loved the nuttier, spicier tastes of Amontillado – my favourite style of sherry. It’s such a delight to bring its casks’ sherried influences to our whisky’s signature delicate style for this special release.

"Aromas of dried fruit and cashews are balanced with peaches, while tastes of clove and ginger contrast wonderfully with orange and lemon. Our fourth Barrel Select Release, Glenmorangie Amontillado Finish, is a delicious treat for any whisky lover."

Glenmorangie Amontillado Finish is available now exclusively through The Whisky Club Australia, at the Glenmorangie Distillery Visitor Centre in Tain, and online in the UK at glenmorangie.com (recommended price £75).
