Highland Park has announced the release of a 54-year-old single malt, the Orkney distillery's oldest whisky release to date.
Launching ahead of the distillery's 225th anniversary, the release is limited to 225 bottles and will be available exclusively from Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Whisky Shop.
The liquid for the special bottling was originally laid down in 1968. Four refill butts and six refill hogsheads were then combined in 2008 and refilled into first-fill European sherry butts. Highland Park says this 14-year secondary maturation has imparted more colour and intensity to the whisky.
The 54 Years Old is presented in a bespoke embossed bottle and housed in a wooden presentation box designed by John Galvin and crafted from Scottish oak. The designs of both the bottle and the box have been inspired by Orkney's Yesnaby cliffs.
Gordon Motion, Highland Park's master whisky maker, said: "This exceptionally rare 54-year-old single malt Scotch whisky has been nurtured through careful maturation and harmonisation. Representing a quarter of Highland Park’s life, we felt it was a fitting way to mark our 225th anniversary: born and crafted in the heart of Orkney."
The Highland Park 54 Years Old single malt will be available from Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Whisky Shop from 23 February with a recommended price of £39,000 per bottle. Buyers will also receive an invitation to visit Orkney.
