Available globally from May, the limited-edition whisky has been matured predominantly in sherry-seasoned European oak, along with first-fill bourbon casks, sherry-seasoned American oak casks, first-fill port hogsheads, and a small quantity of refill casks. The casks was selected by Highland Park's master whisky maker Gordon Motion.
Motion said: "For me, a cask strength whisky really celebrates an individual’s whisky journey, best enjoyed with your own personal level of water and ice added. The peat from our home in Orkney gives the whisky a completely different character with aromatic heather smoke and unexpected contrasts in sweet and smoky flavours."
To celebrate the Cask Strength No.4 release, Highland Park has partnered with UK-based woodworker Jamie Gaunt to create a commemorative work of art incorporating some staves from the casks used to mature the whisky. The sculpture, inspired by both the distillery and its Highland home, will be on display in Orkney from summer 2023.
Gaunt said: "The crafts of whisky production and woodworking draw many parallels. Just as I transform a piece of wood, wood has the same impact on whisky. Cask Strength No.4 is no different; each of the casks used in the whisky contribute to the complex flavours and aromas. To commemorate the launch, I have transformed the staves from the casks to create a unique design inspired by Highland Park in its purest form."
Highland Park Cask Strength No.4 (64.3% ABV) will be available from May at £80 (US$100). Find out more at highlandpark.com.
The Cask Strength No.4 follows the launch of a limited-edition 54-year-old single malt from Highland Park earlier in 2023, also timed to coincide with its 225th anniversary.
