Scotland's Lochlea Distillery is preparing to launch its second cask strength whisky, for those who want a 'bolder' taste of its single malt.
The farm-based distillery in Ayrshire is releasing Cask Strength Batch 2 on 10 June, following the success of its first cask strength bottling in 2023. Not only will the Batch 2 release be older, with the majority of the liquid being five years old, but it uses a cask make-up that has not previously been shown in a Lochlea release: Pedro Ximénez (60 per cent) and oloroso (28 per cent) sherry butts, and shaved, toasted, and recharred (STR) wine barriques (12 per cent).
John Campbell, Lochlea’s production director, said: “Last year's Cask Strength exceeded expectations for a four-year-old, setting a high standard. With Batch 2 this year, we've once again surpassed expectations. This whisky packs a punch, showcasing a complexity greater than the sum of its parts.
“Cask Strength Batch 1 had lovely layers of fresh, tropical fruit. Batch 2 has less of the signature Lochlea green apple dominance, but will have more weight to it, with a floral, lively palate and peppery European oak finish. Batch 2 will feel bigger and bolder than Batch 1, making it an interesting dram to explore.”
Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 2 (60% ABV) will be available from 10 June with a recommended price of £66.50. A list of stockists can be found at lochleadistillery.com.
