McConnell's Irish Whisky has revealed its latest bottling, the 5 Years Old Cognac Cask Finish. The release is the final instalment in the brand's 5 Years Old Series, through which McConnell's has previously finished its whiskey in bourbon and sherry casks.
The new release is blended from Irish malt and grain whiskeys, and has been matured for five years in first-fill bourbon casks, before its finishing period in the Cognac casks, an unusual style for Irish whiskey.
McConnell's says the Cognac Cask Finish has notes of macerated orange peel, banana, and vanilla, with candied lemons, icing sugar, and blonde chocolate.
Master distillery Graeme Miller explained: “With the Cognac Cask Finish, we wanted to do something that truly sets us apart. Cognac casks aren’t a traditional choice for Irish whiskey, but that’s exactly why we pursued them. They offer a luxurious sweetness and unexpected depth, layers of soft fruit, gentle spice, and a velvety finish that perfectly complement our blend.”
He added: “This release is a true blend of innovation and heritage. By drawing on the rich legacy of the Cognac region, a tradition of craftsmanship that mirrors our own, we’ve created something that honours our 18th-century roots, but that also pushes the boundaries of what’s expected from Irish whiskey. Inspired by our past, to create future tasting experiences for whiskey lovers to enjoy”
McConnell's 5 Years Old Cognac Cask Finish (46% ABV, RRP £45) is available now via select retailers.
