Murray McDavid has revealed its ULTRA collection, a series of high-age statement “masterpieces of time”. The casks selected for the collection have spent decades ageing in the independent bottler’s Highland warehouses.
Speaking at the ULTRA launch event at Edinburgh’s Signet Library, Dean Jode, who leads the Murray McDavid whisky creations team, described the casks selected for the collection as “our pinnacles, our ultra-aged single malt whiskies matured far and beyond.”
The oldest single malt bottled under ULTRA is Caperdonich 1972 50 Years Old. The now-lost Speyside distillery was demolished in 2011 after a complex history of closure and reopening. Although it closed its doors in 2002, the distillery’s history is preserved in the half-century aged bottling by Murray McDavid. The bottler describes the 50-year-old whisky as “charming and characterful”.
Joining the Caperdonich is Glen Scotia 1991 33 Years Old, a single malt that “showcases elegance and complexity”. The Campbeltown whisky spent the majority of those 33 years maturing in a Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir cask.
Completing the trio of whiskies is the Macallan 1993 30 Years Old, which Jode describes as “the pinnacle of luxury within the Murray McDavid range”. The whisky was matured in a combination of sherry casks from Jerez, Spain.
