Independent bottler One Cask at a Time launched its debut collection of single cask malt whiskies at a launch event in Edinburgh last week.

Held at Gosford House, the event gave guests the opportunity to sample the collection of whiskies, as well as several other interactive pop-ups including a display of Bonhams luxury watches and a Walker Slater boutique. There was also a musical performance from jazz singer Niki King and a whole range of cocktails available.

The three ranges in the collection include Chronograph, Pendulum and Grandfather, each representing different times and age statements.

All flavour profiles and tasting notes below are according to the producers.

Chronograph is made up of two expressions that are at a more accessible price point compared with the other releases. Ben Nevis 2012 (56.1% ABV,RRP £89), has tasting notes of sweet fruit, gentle oak, and an earthy finish. There are 307 bottles available. Glentauchers 2009 (56.9% ABV, RRP £115) has 271 bottles available, and has a fruity, citric flavour profile.

Pendulum is made up of just one expression, and has a focus on age statement and contemporary packaging. Auchentoshan 1998 (59.5% ABV, RRP £375) is a 26-year-old whisky has aromas of lemon zest and pineapple, with a sweet, acidic flavour profile.

The final range, Grandfather, is at a significantly higher price point for each of the three bottles. Ledaig 1993 (42.3% ABV, RRP £599) has aromas of strawberries and cut grass, with a sweet palate. Aultmore 1990 (43.8% ABV, RRP £675) has 146 bottles in the collection, with aromas of apple and cappuccino, with a flavour profile of pineapple, banana, and caramel. The last is the most expensive across the entire collection, Highland Park 1990 (43.4% ABV, RRP £699), with 187 bottles available. This expression has aromas of seaweed and salt, with notes of white pepper and toasted oak on the palate.

Head of brand development at One Cask at a Time, Russell Bradley, commented: “Only casks of exceptional quality have been chosen for bottling under the One Cask at a Time label. A testament to the art of whisky making and a tribute to the role time has to play in transforming a whisky, each cask has been hand selected for their unique qualities — bottling a moment in time to share with the world.”

The brand is also using a bottle passport feature, chronicling the liquid’s origins from the cask being filled to the day its bottled. All information is available by tapping the icon on the bottle neck with a smartphone.

Bradley continued: “We’re here to add something new to the world of whisky for the next generation. The contactless icon on the bottle neck allows owners to instantly verify the authenticity of their purchase, it also takes them to the app where they can learn about every aspect of the bottle and the liquid it contains. But whilst we very much look to the future it’s important to know that without the hands of time, good whisky can never become exceptional.”
