Bourbon brand Maker’s Mark has announced the appointment of Dr Blake Layfield as its next master distiller.

Layfield has held a series of leadership roles since joining Suntory Global Spirits from Diageo back in 2019, serving most recently as senior director of innovation, blending, and quality at Maker’s Mark. He holds a doctorate in food science and a general certificate in distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling. Layfield also co-chairs the Research Committee of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

In his new role, Layfield will oversee the consistency and taste vision of the brand’s bourbon, as well as the innovation of new products.

“Visionary leadership has been a critical and consistent factor in the success of Maker’s Mark, from the moment Bill Sr and Margie Samuels decided to create something completely different in the bourbon category 70 years ago,” said Rob Samuels, eighth generation whisky maker and managing director at Maker’s Mark.

“Blake embodies the brand’s commitment to culture, quality and a higher purpose, and I am thrilled he and the Maker’s Mark leadership team are guardians of the brand’s legacy and vanguards driving the brand forward.”

The role, which used to include that of general manager, has formerly been held by Greg Davis, now director of distillery operations at James B Beam Distilling, and Denny Potter, who departed with fellow Maker's Mark alum Jane Bowie to found Potter Jane Distilling Co in Kentucky.

Layfield isn’t the only new appointment at Maker’s Mark — the brand has also announced Beth Buckner as its new lead blender. Buckner has been with Maker’s Mark since 2013 and played a vital role in the development of the acclaimed Wood Finishing Series. She will lead the brand’s push for innovation and the art of blending.

The distillery's general manager Kim Harmon, will continue to oversee all operations.
