The new Coastal Series will see the 'Maritime Malt' collaborate with other coastal drinks producers on four expressions. The first, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, will launch in the UK, France and Germany on 3 October before rolling out to global markets in January 2023.
The whisky was first matured in American oak casks before being finished in casks that formerly held Pineau des Charentes, a sweet apéritif native to the Charente-Maritime region in southwestern France. The ex-wine casks were hand-selected by master blender Stuart Harvey.
Malcolm Waring, distillery manager at Old Pulteney, says the flavours of the Pineau des Charentes cask complement the distillery's house style. He describes the new expression as having sweetness and complexity with notes of ripe peach, vanilla and citrus, with more candied citrus notes coming from the wine casks. "It is as deep as the ocean, complex and extremely well-balanced," he added. "We wanted something with character and story, to see something from two places coming together."
On the motivations behind the new collection, Waring said that coastal influence was "part and parcel" of Old Pulteney's whiskies, and that the distillery was aiming to collaborate with other producers that were influenced by their coastal location.
In a press statement to celebrate the new release, he said: "Old Pulteney’s past, present and taste is influenced by its home by the sea on the Caithness coast, and the Coastal Series beautifully explores cask maturations that highlight wonderful expressions influenced by their global coastal homes."
Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes is bottled at 46% ABV and is non-chill filtered. It is presented in a gold gift box adorned with an illustration of the French coastline. It will retail at £75 and will be available in the UK, France and Germany from The Whisky Exchange, the Old Pulteney visitor centre, and other specialist whisky retailers.
Further expressions in the Old Pulteney Coastal Series will be released annually.
