Have you wondered what a once-in-a-lifetime whisky holiday might look like? How does a three-week round-the-world holiday for two visiting 12 top distilleries along the way sound? Canada’s Canadian Club, Jack Daniel’s and Maker’s Mark in the US,Yamazaki in Japan and Scotland’s Glenfiddich, Bowmore and Talisker are all on the itinerary, which also includes the chance to make your own blended whisky, as well as having your dinner personally cooked by celebrity chef Tom Lewis.

This is the superb prize being offered by World of Whiskies, the UK’s largest retailer of single malt whiskies, to anyone signing up to become a registered user of its new website,, which went live on October 1. The site allows users to browse the airport store’s range of more than 300 whiskies and pre-order their favourite dram for collection at their airport of departure (World of Whiskies currently has stores at all three London airports, and at Glasgow and Edinburgh).

The site also offers plenty of other features such as recommendations from Whisky Magazine’s own Charles Maclean (Glen Garioch Founder’s Reserve at£30.99 is his first tip), quarterly newsletters, advance details of upcoming launches and in-store tastings, as well as information on competitions and free gifts. also features an online forum, where members can rate any whiskies they’ve bought recently and swap tasting notes with other site users.

The site has a page showcasing the growing range of World of Whiskies exclusives, which includes the rarified likes of Balvenie 50 Years Old (£6,000), Dalmore Sirius (£10,000) and Glenfiddich Private Vintage 1973 (£1,000) at the top end, to the rather more affordable Douglas Laing Royal Brackla 11 Years Old (£29.99) and Blair Athol 12 Years Old Sherry Finish (£29.99) at the other.

Coinciding with the launch of the new site, is a new World of Whiskies shop at London Heathrow’s T4, joining the two outlets already open at T5 and T1.Working with William Grant & Sons, the new store gives the World of Whiskies look a more contemporary feel and new features include a tasting bar a ‘Rare & Vintage’ corner to showcase the more expensive and collectible whiskies offered.

The Royal Legacy of 1745

Drambuie has been on the slide in duty-free for year in terms of sales, but the launch of a new ultra-premium exclusive,The Royal Legacy of 1745, might help stop the rot.

Priced at about the same level as Johnnie Walker Black Label (about £125), Royal Legacy with its heavy crystal decanter is very much geared towards what’s left of the Asian duty-free gifting market.

The juice itself is made from a blended base of single malt whiskies (aged a minimum of 15 years), and is cask infused for six months before bottling.

The first production run is limited to 2,000 bottles.

Until March next year distribution of The Royal Legacy of 1745 will be confined to a handful of key airports worldwide, Heathrow in Europe, for example, Dubai in the Middle East, Bangkok and Singapore Changi in Asia, and Sydney in the Pacific region.

Old Pulteney

23 Years Old Bourbon Cask

Old Pulteney has been selling extremely well with World Duty Free (WDF) at Edinburgh airport this summer.

A sampling promotion for the Wick-based brand during June and July notched up sales of more than£117,000, smashing the airport’s previous sales record for a spirits promotion.

It’s not hard to see what all the fuss is about – WDF stocks a great Old Pulteney range including the 12, 17 and 12 Years Old variants, and two exclusive expressions: a 23 Years Old Bourbon Cask and a 23 Years Old Sherry Cask.
Old Pulteney 23 Years Old Bourbon Cask is a particularly fine, full-bodied dram, pleasantly spicy and rich on the palate.

Priced at £150, Old Pulteney 23 Years Old Bourbon Cask now is available at all World of Whiskies outlets.
