Port Ellen is marking two centuries since its founding. The Islay distillery was reopened last year by Diageo after 40 years of closure.
To celebrate the milestone anniversary, Port Ellen has announced a new bottling. Distilled in 1983, shortly before the distillery went dormant, the 42-year-old whisky is described by the brands as "quintessential Port Ellen".
The single malt Scotch whisky has spent its four-decades-plus of maturation in European oak casks. A limited run of 150 bottles has been released.
Aimée Morrison, Port Ellen master blender, said the whisky is: "A wonderful expression which embodies the essence of Port Ellen; the complexities of smoke mingled with underlying berry flavours, bringing depth and harmony to the whisky."
Morrison added that the 42-year-old single malt has "notes of caramelising brown sugars balanced with red berries and peeled red apple skin" and "smoke which climbs into the distance".
The distillery also recently announced Port Ellen Prism, a 46-year-old single malt which has been donated to the Distillers One of One charity auction, which will be held on 10 October 2025. Housed in a glass sculpture by Wilfried Grootens, the one-of-a-kind bottling is expected to sell for £150,000–£300,000 at auction.
The Port Ellen 200th Anniversary Edition (RRP £7,500) will be available to purchase from October 2025, from the distillery on Islay by appointment, or by enquiring with Diageo's private client team in Scotland.
