Team behind Port of Leith Distillery launches Perpetuity blended whisky

The blend of single malt and single grain whiskies from three Scotch distilleries was created through a vatting process

The Leith Export Co., the trading arm for Lind & Lime and Port of Leith products, has launched a blended whisky ahead of the opening of its flagship Port of Leith Distillery.

Perpetuity is modelled on the concept of an infinity bottle – one that is constantly topped up with new liquid to create a unique combination of whiskies. Comprising a blend of single malt and single grain whiskies from Highland, Speyside and Lowland distilleries, it was created through the process of vatting – a technique more commonly found in brandy production that has been employed by other Scotch whisky makers such as Glenfiddich for its travel retail-exclusive Perpetual Collection.

This first batch of Perpetuity is composed of four whiskies: Glentauchers 6 Years Old single malt, aged in first-fill oloroso sherry hogsheads; Deanston 9 Years Old single malt, aged in ex-bourbon barrels; and two single grain whiskies from North British, a 13-year-old aged in ex-bourbon and a 7-year-old aged in virgin American oak.

The whisky's launch comes as the Leith Export Co. prepares to open its £13.5 million Port of Leith 'vertical' distillery in summer 2023. New-make spirit from the distillery has already been released to members of its Quality Control Division, its version of a founders' club.

A closer look at Perpetuity

Perpetuity is said to have been inspired by the story of a 15th-century Leith cooper, Henry Douglas (nicknamed the 'Cursed Cooper'), who is depicted in the original artwork on the bottle label.

Ian Stirling, co-founder of Leith Export Co., said: "The name Perpetuity is inspired by the way we intend to collect and blend whiskies from distilleries across Scotland, bottle at least half of this vat and then replenish with different whiskies, which leaves us with a perpetual vat of intriguing and complex Scotch whisky.

"Batch 1 is made up of casks from Deanston, North British and Glentauchers distilleries, which combine to create a smooth whisky with notes of caramelised apple tart on the nose, toffee and marmalade on the palate before finishing with a sharp lemon drizzle cake with clotted cream."

Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch 1 (45.7% ABV) is limited to 1,430 bottles and is available via the Leith Export Co. website and specialist retailers. It joins the company's Lind & Lime London dry gin, La Garde Écossaise champagne, and Port of Leith's oloroso sherry and white and tawny ports.
