The Balvenie announces The Makers Project

Speyside distillery partners with artists and musicians in craft-focused campaign and event

21 September 2021

Mercury Prize and BRIT Award-winning musician Michael Kiwanuka and artist Tishk Barzanji will front The Balvenie’s new brand campaign ‘The Makers Project’, drawing on the craft history of whisky-making and designed to showcase individuals who have “taken something from great to exceptional in their field”.

A launch event at the Barbican, titled ‘The Makers: Live’, will see Kiwanuka and Barzanji read personal letters penned to their younger selves. They will be joined by David C. Stewart MBE, The Balvenie’s malt master, along with several creative friends. Barzanji says: “Art found me at a time that I needed an outlet – it showed me a new path in life. At any age, everyone has something to gain from experiencing and participating in creativity.”

Katy Emami, senior brand manager at The Balvenie UK, comments: “The Makers Project will give the public a chance to explore and celebrate modern day craftsmanship, seeking to inspire the Maker in us all.” Kiwanuka says: “It’s my hope that we inspire others to pick up that instrument and rediscover their fire, because there is so much to be gained from it.”

In 2022, Kiwanuka and Barzanji will join forces to create phase two of the campaign.

The Makers: Live will take place at 6:30pm on 6 October 2021 at The Barbican. Tickets will be available to the public at £10 each, with all proceeds going to the Crafts Council. Pease visit: https://uk.thebalvenie.com/themakers.
