One of the key selling points for the whisky – besides its limited stock – is the opportunity to receive an NFT featuring custom artwork from The New Yorker illustrator Maddie Dai. The NFT designs are said to meld the distinctive worlds of Rothes, Scotland and New York City.
Selling at an RRP of $3,600, this single cask is available to buy at select fine spirit retailers across the US and online exclusively here.
Gregory Cozzolino, Marketing Director of Breakthrough Brands at Edrington, said on the whisky: “The Glenrothes is a hidden gem among single malt Scotch whiskies, one with a storied background, prized by those who care to look beyond the norm and understand the rewards that can follow. Today’s release embodies the ethos of what it means to explore beyond what is expected and cherish a deeper perspective, by starting with a complex, beautifully balanced whisky, then inviting exploration of a bigger world that bridges The Glenrothes and New York City through the vessel of an NFT that our innovative founders undoubtedly would have embraced.”
The producer has described the liquid as having notes of ripe peaches, sweet ground ginger and fresh almonds on the nose, a tropical fruit taste with orange zest and vanilla sweetness, concluded by a sweet, fruity and gently fragrant finish.
The Glenrothes NFT will live on the Solana blockchain, and after appearing on the packaging of the whisky, Dai’s black-and-white etch creations will be sent to consumers digital wallets.
Laura Rampling, Master Whisky Maker for The Glenrothes, also spoke: “This individual cask was identified years ago as something special. When it reached 36 years, the liquid was considered optimal in terms of its maturation and flavour development. This wonderful liquid has all the typical fruity character of The Glenrothes as well as notes of fresh almonds which are often apparent in our older editions. There is also a unique fragrance to it, including hints of rose oil and gentle spice, which are a product of its aging in this particular cask.”
