The Lakes Distillery is aiming to offer whisky drinkers a glimpse "into the mind of a whiskymaker" with its new release, Elements.

A collection of seven limited-edition bottlings, Elements has been informed by the English distiller's Whiskymaker's Project, a research initiative into sherry cask maturation which began before the distillery launched its first single malts.

Through its expressions, the Elements 'library' aims to expand on this research into sherry, its reaction to the distillery's microclimate, and how the Lakes' new-make spirit behaves with seven different sherry-seasoned casks: Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Cream, Pedro Ximénez, and Oloroso.

The Lakes' former whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi, who worked with the distillery team on the Elements releases, said: "Understanding how the theory of sherry cask maturation translates to the surrounds of the Lake District and with our new-make spirit was a fundamental step toward establishing our oak-led maturation philosophy and designing a new sherry-led single malt."

The Lakes Distillery Elements "library"

Only 1,386 Elements libraries have been produced, retailing for £500 and comprising seven 200ml bottles of single malt whisky (all 54% ABV). Each collection is individually numbered and accompanied by a 'Book of Elements' offering a background to each sherry wine used and how it interacts with the cask and spirit. Registered owners will also receive access to exclusive online content, including a discussion between Gandhi and the Lakes Distillery's commercial director Kirsty Taylor about the Whiskymaker's Project.

Elements will be available from lakesdistillery.com and specialist whisky retailers from 28 March.

The distillery named Sarah Burgess as its new whiskymaker earlier this year.
