The Maclean Foundation has revealed its second charity bottling. The new whisky release is drawn from a single cask donated by Campbeltown distillery Glen Scotia. 210 bottles of the eight-year-old whisky will released in aid of the foundation’s clean-water project.
The Maclean Foundation, founded by whisky expert Charles Maclean and his three sons, aims to provide a lifetime of clean water to people in Madagascar. The charity says its first release, an Ardnamurchan 2017, provided 700 people with clean water for life.
The new Glen Scotia release is aged in first-fill bourbon casks. Maclean says it has notes of white grape, melon, white pepper, vanilla, and toffee, starting sweet and then becoming salty.
Maclean commented: “It’s a triumph and will do so much good. Every single one of those bottles will provide clean water for life for at least one person in Madagascar.”
Iain McAlister added: “This young, unpeated, first-fill bourbon liquid is a real sweet spot for Glen Scotia, demonstrating our signature distillery style — a whisky full of tropical fruit, oiliness, and that distinct hint of the sea. It’s unmistakably Campbeltown and we’re so pleased Charles went with this selection for such an important project.”
He continued: “Charles has become a wonderful friend to us over the years and… having an opportunity to repay his support by donating this cask to the Maclean Foundation is a complete pleasure, especially knowing the impact it will have for so many in Madagascar.”
Maclean’s sons — Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan — became the first brothers to row any ocean when they rowed across the Atlantic ocean in January 2020. In April 2025 they will embark on the Rare Whisky 101 Pacific Row, a non-stop Pacific ocean journey undertaken to raise £1 million to help the Maclean Foundation build more clean water bore holes in Madagascar.
The Maclean Foundation’s Glen Scotia 2016 is bottled at 59.1% ABV and is available now via Royal Mile Whiskies at RRP £115.
