Is it about nosing serious drams in masterclasses? Does it mean St Patrick’s celebrations, Hogmanay and the Kentucky Derby? Perhaps it’s Guns N’ Roses, Mick and Keef, Willie Nelson or Richard Harris?Perhaps your magic whisky moments include windy sunsets on Islay, but just as much, they might include sirens at sunrise in the city of your choice. What do you find fascinating about whisky? Is it the diversity, or the production or maturation process? Perhaps it’s the global business of whisky and the way it is marketed. Does it amuse you that Margaret Thatcher drank it to stay awake, and that Saddam Hussein had caseloads of it hidden away? Our new World of Whisky pages, launched next issue, aim to capture the many sides of whisky in an irreverent and fun way. We want to recount anecdotes involving whisky, to capture amusing moments and to reflect how it appears in the media. When BBC correspondent John Simpson writes about his love of Laphroaig or Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen turns his nose up at a glass of Bruichladdich with the words: “I’d rather stick to champagne”, then this is where we’ll report it.We’ll cover trends and the more gossipy end of the news, and feature points of trivia that help make the world of whisky such a fascinating one. The emphasis will be on fun, but there will be an educative role to the pages too. We want to feature a duty-free buy of the month in each issue, and there will be a ‘what to buy’ section in which we’ll take a category such as ‘port wood finishes’ and ask a group of retailers to make recommendations. And there will be an opportunity for readers to get involved, too, with an interactive series of competitions designed to prompt great whisky stories. To get the ball rolling, we’ve launched two competitions on this page. But we are keen to include any amusing stories, jokes, and celebrity moments here too. All you have to do to be in with a chance of being included is email your contributions to dominic@whiskymag.com
