The auction house in Perthshire, Scotland saw 1,642 bidders from 56 countries participate in the first part of the online auction for The Perfect Collection by Mr Gooding, held on 19 February.
The coveted and rare Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami 60 Years Old fetched a hammer price of $1,072,000 (£825,000), smashing the previous world record price by more than $100,000 and making Whisky Auctioneer the first to sell a $1,000,000 bottle in an online auction. The Macallan 1928 Anniversary Malt 50 Years Old also fetched a record-breaking price of $119,863, beating the previous top hammer price of $93,819 set in October 2019.
In total, the 201 bottles from The Macallan up for auction – including revered releases from its Lalique range – reached a total hammer price of $2,559,218 (£1,997,000).
Other highlights included O.O. Old Orkney Real Liqueur Whisky (c. 1930s) from Stromness Distillery, which set a record price of $33,891
(£26,000) following a bidding war between parties from the UK, Germany, Vietnam and Italy, and two bottles of Ardbeg 1974 Double Barrel, which achieved a hammer price of $27,705 (£21,250).
Iain McClune, founder of Whisky Auctioneer, said: "We always knew that The Perfect Collection by Mr Gooding could make whisky history, but with auctions anything can happen. All in all the first part of the collection sale achieved $4,277,000 (£3,290,000) over 1,932 bottles. For me it is the diversity within The Perfect Collection that is perhaps the most exciting aspect. The breadth makes it an opportunity accessible for all."
The final part of the sale starts on 10 April, featuring rare bottles such as The Macallan 1926 Fine & Rare and a 1937 Glenfiddich 64 Years Old. Interested parties can register for the auction online.
