Wight Whisky, the Isle of Wight distillery dedicated entirely to whisky making, has revealed its first ever single malt whisky. The limited-edition No.1 Single Malt follows the distillery's launch of its Signature Malt Blend in 2024, the first release from the brand.
Wight Whisky's single malt is distilled entirely from barley farmed on the Isle of Wight, with a seal of approval from Isle of Wight Grain, which supports and represents barley farmers on the island.
The distillery works in collaboration with local brewer Goddard's Brewery to create its mash, which is fermented for more than seven days before being distilled at New Farm, Wight Whisky's location. The practice of partnering with a brewery to create mash for English single malt has raised controversy recently due to the English Whisky Guild's bid for a geographical indication for English whisky.
The No.1 Single Malt is the first of multiple limited-edition bottlings from Wight Whisky which will chart the distillery's progress towards its first core-range single malt, its "signature" three-year-old whisky planned for release in 2027.
Distillery co-founder Lucy Gregg commented: "Our No.1 Single Malt is the purest expression of our island — the first of its kind, it has been shaped by long sunlit days, salty sea air, and the richness of our island’s precious soil. Every sip tells a story of local barley, island spring water and the passionate hands that brought them together. We are super proud to release this limited-edition whisky that so authentically captures the beauty and essence of our island home."
Wight Whisky says the No.1 Single Malt has notes of caramel, baking spice, candied peel, fudge, dark chocolate, and "a hint of smoke".
