Witchmark Distillery, a Wiltshire-based spirits maker, has announced that it has received a B Corp certification. The certification is awarded in recognition of a company's high level of environmental, social, and governance credentials.
Still in its early days, the distillery finished commissioning its site on Fonthill Estate in Wiltshire in summer 2024. Having filled its first casks of single malt whisky, the distillery has also released gin and vodka made from its own-distilled neutral grain spirit.
The distillery says it has been founded with "sustainable principles at its core". Its sustainable approach includes locally sourced barley from Fonthill Farm, which has a regenerative agriculture system to support biodiversity. The distillery also uses sustainably sourced energy such as solar power, powers its stills with bio-liquid propane gas, and has a heat-recovery system in the production process to reduce energy waste. Other initiatives include circular waste management and 100 per cent recycled glass bottles.
Alistair Munro, co-founder and managing director of Witchmark Distillery, commented: "Achieving B Corp certification with an outstanding 124 points is a monumental milestone for Witchmark Distillery. As a producer of premium whisky, gin, and vodka, we believe that great spirits should not only taste exceptional but also be crafted with integrity, sustainability, and social responsibility at their core.
"This certification reaffirms our commitment to implementing ethical business practices, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Being part of the B Corp movement means we are held to the highest standards of transparency and impact, and we are immensely proud to stand alongside other businesses driving meaningful change."
With a planned debut in 2027, Witchmark's whisky is maturing in a mixture of new American oak, ex-bourbon, and red wine casks. The distillery recently launched its visitor centre, through which it offers distillery tours and tasting experiences.
