In honour of its Speyside home and the fond memories made there, the family has recently introduced House of Hazelwood, a new standalone bottler that has brought the Gordons’ private stocks of old and exceptionally rare Scotch whisky to market for the first time.
Released in spring 2022 to much acclaim, House of Hazelwood’s first batch of bottlings comprised eight whiskies split equally across the Legacy Collection, which features unusual and unique highlights from the family’s inventory, and the Charles Gordon Collection, which is eponymously named for Charles ‘Charlie’ Grant Gordon, the great-grandson of Glenfiddich founder William Grant, and includes remarkable whiskies typically aged for more than 50 years.
Showcasing a range of historic and venerably aged spirits across the spectrum of Scotch whisky styles, House of Hazelwood’s first release included liquid as rare as the very first drops of spirit from the family’s Girvan grain distillery (limited to just 71 bottles and sold out within weeks), the distillation of which was overseen by Charlie Grant Gordon himself on Christmas Day 1963.
The star of House of Hazelwood’s autumn collection is undoubtedly the show-stopping 1963 release, aptly named A Singular Blend. Unprecedented at this age, this most singular of blends is composed not only of whiskies from the same region but of Scotch whiskies from the very same Highland distillery – with both grain and malt components stemming from the same year of production at the same site.
A stunning, highly unusual release showcasing the remarkable complexity that can stem from a single distillery and, to our knowledge, the oldest whisky of its kind ever to be released. Just 74 bottles are available for pre-order and, like The First Drop, it is expected to sell out within weeks.
Following the immense success of its first release and to celebrate the new Autumn collection, now available online, one lucky Whisky Magazine reader will have the rare opportunity to taste the full range of House of Hazelwood’s second release, while two further readers will be given a taste of the new Legacy Collection bottlings.
To be in with a chance of winning one of three exclusive tasting packs, simply sign up online here to become a House of Hazelwood ‘Keyholder’.
