The world’s first 100% community-owned distillery, GlenWyvis Distillery, has launched its first-ever whisky.

3,600 individually numbered bottles of the three-year-old GlenWyvis Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky have been allocated to GlenWyvis Distillery shareholders – 3,000 locals, whose investment enabled the build and development of the distillery, which opened in 2016.

A further 2,000 bottles were available to pre-order in October 2020 and sold out almost immediately. 200 bottles will also be available at selected local retailers and on-trade premises throughout Scotland.

Made from a batch of 18 casks, including 15 first-fill ex-Tennessee whiskey and two first-fill ex-Moscatel casks, this grain-forward whisky showcases the fruitiness derived from an extra-long fermentation. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV with no chill-filtration. No colouring is added.

The distillery describes the whisky as possessing a light and floral nose with a hint of malty sweetness and a palate of rich stone-fruit, brown sugar and vanilla.

The design of the GlenWyvis bottle is inspired by the local area. The bottle sports the contour lines of Ben Wyvis, the mountain forming the backdrop to the distillery. You will also see birds on the bottle – these are Red Kites, majestic birds of prey with forked tails that you will often see around the distillery.

Matthew Farmer, distillery manager at GlenWyvis, said, “We are so excited to be launching GlenWyvis Distillery’s first whisky. Our journey over the past few years and the creation of GlenWyvis Distillery is thanks to our many shareholders so it is only fitting that they will be among the first to try our first whisky...”

Board chairman, David Graham, added, “Present and past directors will join me in expressing real pride and admiration for the dedicated GlenWyvis team on reaching this significant milestone and producing Dingwall’s first whisky in almost 100 years. Our small team has worked with passion to produce a fantastic product for all our shareholders and customers, and I look forward to raising a dram to each and every one of them, and to the future of GlenWyvis Distillery.”
