John P. Simson founded the Bowmore Distillery in 1779. Simson passed the distillery onto the ownership of the Mutter family, who introduced a number of innovative processes to the distillery, including an iron steam ship to transport barley and coal to the island from the mainland. During World War Two, the distillery hosted RAF Coastal Command, who operated on anti-submarine missions.
