Built in 1897, the distillery was first called Strathspey but soon changed to Dalwhinnie meaning 'Plain of Meetings' in Gaelic, a reference to the location at a junction of old drove roads. The majority of the spirit produced there still goes into the Buchanan's and Black and White blends, despite its respected status in Diageo's Classic Malts series. There has been some debate over whether Dalwhinnie
is falls into the Highland or Speyside region of whisky-making in Scotland; Diageo insist it is a Highland malt, but it was classified a Speyside malt in 2009 when the region's borders were defined in The Scotch Whisky Regulations of that year. For those interested in quibbling, there is also a bit of controversy about who can claim the title of 'Highest Distillery in Scotland', Dalwhinnie or Braeval. Show more
