Buffalo Trace Distillery can trace its roots back to 1811, when Benjamin Harrison Blanton is said to have began distilling at a site on the Kentucky River near Riverside. A small distillery was then set up on this site in 1858, by a Daniel Swigert, which was subsequently expanded on by Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., in 1872.
The distillery was purchased by George T. Stagg, 1878, although Taylor
remained to oversee operations.
The name Buffalo Trace was given to the distillery in 1999, following its purchase by the Sazerac family. The flagship brand, Buffalo Trace, is also started.
