Hakushu (pronounced 'hack-shoo') is a Japanese whisky distillery owned by the Suntory group, founders of the first Japanese distillery, Yamazaki. It is situated 700m above sea level on the forested slopes of Mount Kai-komagateke, in the 'alps' of Japan.
The original Hakushu distillery was built in 1973, with another distillery building called Hakushu Higashi (meaning 'east') added in 1981.
The distillery is the largest in the world - although half its stills are currently mothballed - and the entire site extends to 210 acres. All single malt production is now focused on the new site.Show more
