Talisker Distillery was built in 1830 at Carbost (the name comes in part from the Norse, Bost meaning 'Farm') on Loch Harport, and was leased to Donald MacLellan in 1857. In 1866 MacLellan passes over the lease to Glasgow agent John Anderson and by 1898 Talisker Distilleries is one of the largest selling single malt whiskies in the country. In 1916 a consortium including
John Walker and Sons and John Dewar and sons takes control. From 1941-1945 the distillery closes due to the conservation of barley supplies for food. Production ceases for the duration of the second world war. The still-house is destroyed by fire on 22nd November 1960 and re- opens in 1962.Show more
