When John Teeling acquired a former potato distillery in Co. Louth in 1987 and renamed it Cooley Distillery, it was the first whiskey distillery to be founded in Ireland for over a century. It was not long before the owners began to acquire famous brands and distilleries that had been mothballed, including Kilbeggan which is run in conjunction with Cooley under the name Kilbeggan Distiiling Co.
