Under the Hammer

In this 100th Edition of the Whisky Magazine which was first printed on the 20th November 1998, John Rose has selected six bottles at the price collectors could have bought them at auction in that year and the prices they would realise at auction in 2011. The investment potential has been quite impressive. Ifa collector had bought six bottles of each of the above in 1998 the cost would have been £6,828 and if sold at auction in 2011 the investment would be worth £40,620.
BOWMORE BLACK 1ST EDITION
Distillation: Bowmore Distillery, Bowmore, Isle of Islay, Argyll. 1964.
Bottling: Limited Edition of 2,000 Bts. Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled by the prop.
Strength: 50 % Vol.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle, plain black wax capsule over cork stopper, wax seal on the shoulder over black ribbon,main label etched on the glass, white letters, black background, bottle contained within its original wooden presentation box.
Comment: Black Bowmore was produced in three editions,1st 1993, 2nd 1994, & Final 1995.

Distillation: Macallan Distillery, Craigellachie, Banffshire.1967.
Bottling: Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled by the prop. 1986, 75cl.
Strength: 43 % Vol.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle, embossed gold capsule black letters,shoulder label white background gold, red & black letters, main label white background gold, red & black letters.
Comment: All the Macallan 18 Years Old series have been very popular with collectors.

Bottling: Macallan Single Highland Malt,bottled by the proprietor, 70cl.
Strength: 40% Vol.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle,plain black foil capsule over cork stopper, main label transfer printed, bottle number at the bottom, rear label also transfer printed black letters,bottle produced without a presentation carton.
Comment: This Macallan was specially selected to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the Private Eye Magazine. A miniature bottle was also produced.

Strength: 58.4% Vol.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle, plain silver foil capsule over cork stopper,main label white background silver letters, rear label same but with names of staff printed, bottle produced without a presentation carton.
Comment: Produced to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Port Ellen Maltings (1973-1998).

Presentation: Dumpy brown glass bottle, embossed screw cap, white gold & black letters, yellow ribbon from cap into label,main label white background, black & gold letters, bottle contained within its original wooden presentation box,together with crystal decanter & white metal stopper.
Comment: This Johnnie Walker was produced in 1985 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the company (1820-1970).
Price Guide: This bottle could be bought at auction in 1998 for £200 and was sold in 2011 for £960.

Presentation: Black antique type glass bottle, wine coloured wax capsule over cork stopper, shoulder label black & gold, circle embossed into the glass in the centre, main label white black letters, bottle contained within it original wooden box together with stopper & certificate.
Comment: Produced to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Distillery (1779 - 1979).
