Under the hammer

It was a great honour for me to have dinner and a dram with the great Italian whisky collector Valentino Zagatti, when he was visiting some distilleries in the northeast of Scotland this summer. Valentino has 3,200 bottles of Malt in his collection, and in this issue I have included six of his favourite bottles

Ardmore


16 Years Old

Distillation: Ardmore Distillery, Aberdeenshire. Bottling:Ardmore Pure Malt Whisky, 16 Years Old, bottled by the proprietor.
Strength: 80 Proof.
Presentation: Tall green glass bottle, embossed gold coloured lead capsule black letters over cork stopper, main label white, gold and black letters, produced without a presentation carton.
Comment: This Ardmore 16 Years Old, was produced only for the employees of Wm. Teachers & Sons Ltd. with under 400 bottles filled in the early 1970s. It rarely comes up for auction.
Price Guide: £500 to £600.


Lagavulin



Distillation: Lagavulin Distillery, Port Ellen, Isle of Islay.
Bottling: Specially Selected Lagavulin Guaranteed Pure Malt Pot Still Whisky, bottled by the proprietor.
Strength: 75 Proof.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle, plain gold coloured foil capsule over clip top, main label white background black and red letters, sketch of the distillery in black and white in the centre.
Comment: This Lagavulin was produced in the early 1960s.
Price Guide: £2,000 to £2,500.


Talisker


Special Reserve

Distillation: Talisker Distillery, Carbost, Isle of Skye.
Bottling: Talisker Special Reserve Fine Old Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, Selected & Bottled for Peter Thomson Perth.
Strength: About 20 Under Proof.
Presentation: Brown coloured three piece moulded glass bottle, plain lead capsule over driven cork, main label white background black letters, bottle produced without presentation carton.
Comment: This Talisker distilled 1887 would be one of a handful of bottles remaining therefore very rare.
Price Guide: £6,000 to £8,000


Parkmore



Distillation: Parkmore Distillery, Dufftown, Banffshire.
Bottling: Parkmore Very Old Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled by the proprietor.
Strength: 20 Under Proof.
Presentation: Tall green glass bottle, embossed lead capsule (Parkmore Glenlivet) over driven cork, main label beige background red and black letters.
Comment: This Parkmore has a analytical statement by G.D. MacDougald F.I.C. dated 12th August 1905.
Price Guide: £3,000 to £3,500


Cardow



Distillation: Cardow Distillery, Knockando, Aberlour. Banffshire.
Bottling: Cardow 100% Pot Still Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, Bottled by The Proprietor John Walker & Sons Ltd.
Strength: 43 Proof
Presentation: Plain gold coloured foil capsule over cork stopper, main label white background sketch of the distillery in black at the top, red and black letters, without a presentation carton.
Comment: This Cardow was produced in the early 1920s for the French Market.
Price Guide: £800 to £1,000


Springbank


1919

Distillation: Springbank Distillery, Campbeltown, Argyll. 1919.
Bottling: Springbank Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled in the 1980s by the proprietor J & A Mitchell & Co. Ltd. no contents statement.
Strength: No Strength Statement.
Presentation: Tall clear glass bottle, Plain gold coloured foil capsule over cork stopper.
Comment: This Springbank 1919 was bottled in the mid 1980s giving an approximate age of 60 years.
Price Guide: £10,000 to £12,000
