Festive Limited Editions

Jonny recommends four of the best
By Jonny McCormick
The end of the year is a time for celebration and a time of indulgence in fine food and drink. It is a time to be generous with your drams, a time to open that bottle that you set aside for a special occasion, and a time to reflect on your fortunes this year. The auction calendar is packed through November and December as collectors boost their collections with some of the best selections of the year. It is often a time when new record prices are set. Whisky companies have produced a number of limited edition bottlings to mark the festivities, and many of these have become firm favourites amongst whisky collectors. In addition to the quarter below, you could consider adding Douglas Laing's Big Peat Christmas Edition, Glengoyne's Christmas Day Vintage 1967 or recent Christmas Cask releases. Will you be lucky enough to be opening one of these to start 2015?

Glenfiddich Rare Collection 125th Anniversary Vintage 1987 55.2%

Bottler: William Grant & Sons

Region: Speyside

WM tasting scores: N/A

Recent auction price: £740

Auction: Scotch Whisky Auctions

Date: September 2014

Comment: William Grant famously began distilling at Glenfiddich on December 25, 1887. 100 years later, the stills ran again on Christmas Day and after a quarter of a century, this beauty was the result. This single cask yielded 286 bottles and very few have appeared at auction to date.

Glenmorangie Last Christmas at Leith 43%

Bottler: Glenmorangie Company

Region: Highland

WM tasting scores: N/A

Recent auction price: £600

Auction: Scotch Whisky Auctions

Date: September 2014

Comment: This internal company bottling from 1995 utilised the attractive lop-sided bottle used on the Glenmorangie 1971 Culloden bottling. There were only 250 bottles issued to mark the end of the long association with the facilities in Leith and auction prices have been on the rise again recently.

Glenfarclas Christmas Day 1959 46%

Bottler: Glenfarclas

Region: Speyside

WM tasting scores: N/A

Recent auction price: £650

Auction: McTear’s, Glasgow

Date: July 2014

Comment: Glenfarclas is known for offering great value for money, but at this price, this bottling is looking extremely attractive these days. This was distilled at Glenfarclas on Christmas Day 1959, with only 96 bottles released in 2002.

Bunnahabhain Auld Acquaintance 1968 43.8%

Bottler: Burn Stewart

Region: Islay

WM tasting scores: 8.5 & 8.5, Issue 28

Recent auction price: £675

Auction: Whisky Online Auctions

Date: May 2014

Comment: This Hogmanay limited edition of 2002 bottles in the eye-catching cherry red tube has been a popular auction collectible ever since it was released. It is a 34 Years Old sherry cask edition distilled on the 31 December 1968.
