Orkney's Deerness Distillery project launches with cask sale

Orkney is welcoming the first new whisky-making venture to launch in the archipelago in more than 130 years.

The Deerness Distillery, founded by husband and wife team Stuart and Adelle Brown, will be a self-built facility in the family's six-acre garden encompassing a distillery, visitor centre and café-bar. Construction on the six-figure project is due to begin in the spring.

The distillery will produce a moderately peated malt spirit as its signature style, with plans to also produce an oat whisky and a local rye whisky. The new facility will also allow the couple to increase production of their existing gins, vodka and coffee liqueur.

To mark the launch of the Deerness Distillery project, the family are offering 200 casks of its inaugural single malt for sales to whisky enthusiasts and investors alike. Cask sales will launch at 12pm GMT on 29 March and are available to buyers worldwide.
