Tasting notes

Taster Christopher Coates

Nose: Sawn oak and hayloft. Nutmeg and cedar, with some dark chocolate and espresso. Rolling tobacco and raisin. A little blackberry jam, plasticine and waxed canvas.
Palate: Light and silky. At first, slightly woody, with cigar tobacco and allspice, but this recedes as some blackcurrant emerges. A touch waxy. Black English breakfast tea, with a dollop of caramel.
Finish: Medium. Tannins become more assertive, but not too drying. The spices linger.
Comment: Pleasant, but not quite delivering on the complexity.

Taster Phoebe Calver

Nose: Very interesting, with physalis fruit, green tomato leaves, vanilla kefir, nutmeg, chopped walnut, peach and prune juice, and pickle.
Palate: Very dry and earthy, almost heathery with mossy forest floor notes. A hint of orange zest, more physalis and a medicinal bandage with vanilla pod.
Finish: Sweet moss lingers, with a kick of almond paste on a medium, warm finish.
Comment: A lesson in not judging a bourbon by its blind tasting label: confusing, but well executed and balanced and... just different. A marmite whiskey.
