Tasting notes
Taster   Chris Goodrum
Nose: Thick and weighty aromas of ‘beery’ malt, coffee, dark chocolate, boiled sweets and rye-like herbal notes. Tarry, oily, fishy and viscous. Water makes it younger and more herbal.
Palate: Intense, alcoholic and malty with beef extract, herbs, tar and thick slabs of primal, oozing, oily peat! Water brings out a barley sweetness and earthy, straw-like grappa notes.
Finish: Eye wateringly alcoholic! The malt, sooty peat and coastal oils stick to the mouth taking minutes to dissipate!
Comment: If George T. Stagg was peated then it would probably be like this.

Taster   Joel Harrison
Nose: This needs a touch of water to open it up, giving a huge hit of smoke, some oak and freshly cut pine, but not much else.
Palate: It’s hard to get beyond the massive whack of peat smoke in the whisky, which masks the subtle back palate of pulled pork and coffee.
Finish: Did I mention peat smoke?
Comment: Like an aeroplane trying to land in this heavy fog at Islay airport, it’s hard to bring this one into land because of the thick fog of peat smoke. Shows that smoke should be an ingredient, not the main ingredient.
