Laphroaig Distillery
ABV 56.1%
At first, I did not recognise this as a Laphroaig. Then I thought that age must have muted its attack, but 16 is scarcely venerable. Can a whisky be an old fogey?

Nose: More like wood smoke than peat. Gradually, beach aromas emerge. Barbecued scallops?
Palate: Oily sweetness. Cereal grain. Toast. Buttery vanilla.
Finish: Peppery, lemony.

Taster
Nose: Incredibly pungent, room-filling phenolics. Fishboxes, hot tar, engine rooms. With water, biscuity malt, wet rope, salt spray, dried fruits.
Palate: Very dry. Smoked paprika and balancing sweet maltiness.
Finish: Fish oil.
Comment: A classic Laphroaig. Allied? Beat this.
Score: 9
