Nose: Woodsmoke, roasting fennel, pear drop, rubber bands, eucalyptus, and flour. White flower notes. A pleasant whiff of swimming pool. Under it all, vanilla cookie and subtle mixed citrus zests.
Palate: Medium-light bodied, but packed full of woodsmoke flavours. More fennel, aloe vera and green tea drink, a touch of jasmine, and sweet vanilla cream.
Finish: Long, on poached apples and pears, with subtle caramel. Cigar smoke lingers.
Comment: Islay’s reputation for excellence summed up in a dram.
Score: 8.5
Taster
Nose: Earthy and peaty, like freshly turned turf, with light medicinal notes over the top. A little malted milk ball and vanilla syrup, with subtle orchard fruit notes and a little beeswax. Very subtle petrolic note.
Palate: Light-medium bodied. The earthy peat notes hold court, with some smouldering barbecue embers. Hints of apricot and peach preserves, well-cooked ‘eggy bread’, and used coffee grounds.
Finish: Medium-long. Continuing peat and a slightly waxy floral note.
Comment: A skilful show of peat’s different shades.
Score: 8.3
